| Animals
in the playground was a commission to design and produce three
sculptures for the site of a play area adjourning prioiry School in
Bedford. The aim was to involve the pupils of the school who
regularly used the play area in as much of the project as
possible. By involving the children then they would learn the processes
of design and production and be excited by the new site. |
| During
several visits to the school I worked with the class to draw up ideas,
model them in plasticine and then determine if they would work.
Three final designs were chosen; a tiger, a rabbit and a
tortoise. The stone was selected and delivered to the school and
again the children were involved in positioning the stone, egyptian
style, for the carving. The carving work was carried out in the
school grounds so that pupils could see the forms taking shape and take
some part in the process. |
| On completion, the sculptures were located in the public play area.
It was a tremendous experience for the children and one which will be
remembered by them and the local community for many years to come. |
